CONNOR CUSHMAN
Farm Manager, Long Island City | he/him
Born and raised in Portland, Maine, Connor grew up skiing, hiking, camping, cycling, and canoeing the great outdoors. He flexed his green thumb early in life, spending time as a child weeding his mother’s garden, and learning to love the seasonality of the harvest during Maine’s fleeting summers. After graduating from Bates College, Connor’s interest in how built environments impact health outcomes led him to Tulane University’s School of Public Health, where he obtained a Masters of Public Health. While in New Orleans, he became increasingly interested in issues around food access and food justice, and began volunteering in urban gardens around the city, ultimately taking a position at a non-profit community health hub called The ReFresh Project. But it was while working for a small urban farm located in N.O's Lower 9th Ward that Connor got a taste of what it meant to grow food directly for the community, and as he worked several subsequent positions in the non-profit sector in the years to follow, he always felt the pull of farming calling him back to the soil. Finally, in 2018, between the fulfillment he felt growing nourishing food and his love for being outdoors and moving his body, he decided to return to agriculture and applied for a farm crew position at Brooklyn Grange. He began his first day on the roof less than twenty-four hours after running the Boston Marathon, and he hasn’t broken pace since, picking up the rhythm of bed prep and brisk harvests and rapidly becoming a capable leader in the field. When Connor isn’t on the roof trellising tomatoes, he might be exploring the city by bike or the surrounding mountain trails by foot, or giving his body a rare chance to rest by working his way through a teetering stack of books.
