JUNIOR SCHOUTEN

HEAD OF HORTICULTURE AND MAINTENANCE | DESIGN/BUILD/MAINTENANCE | HE/HIM

If you can bring yourself to not get annoyed by the huge crowds that it attracts, the High Line actually slams. I love the thought of nature being reintroduced and reclaiming former industrial spaces. The space was designed with suitability in mind smartly choosing native plants or plants that are not taxing on our natural resources.

FAVORITE GREEN SPACE IN NEW YORK

The Design/Build department of Brooklyn Grange goes out to design, build, and maintain green spaces throughout the city. We regularly receive comments from our clients that we are a fun bunch to be around and that they enjoy having us in their spaces. I'm proud that our home base Brooklyn Grange culture follows us around and our clients get to enjoy it too!

PROUDEST GREEN THUMB MOMENT

Easy, Swiss chard— This superstar veggie comes in all colors of the rainbow, making it a crop that can hold its own not only in a veggie garden, but an ornamental flower garden as well. Aside from its beauty, it is resilient AF. Chard can be put into the ground in cold March, vibes in the heat and humidity of NYC August, and doesn't stop going until several hard frosts hit it in January. Ask me for recipes-- my favorite is a chard infused vegan Shepard's sweet potato pie.
