FAQs

  • Each week, our farmers scan the fields to select crops that are most in season to go in your CSA share. In addition to selecting for seasonality, we prioritize crop diversity and vegetables that compliment one another. A typical share is made of of 6-8 items, and might look like:

    • One to two types of salad greens (ie greens mix, arugula, radicchio or lettuce)

    • One bunching green (ie kale, chard or collards)

    • Hardy brassica (ie cabbage, broccoli, bok choi or kohlrabi)

    • One bunch of roots (ie carrots, turnips or radishes)

    • One to two fruiting crops (ie tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, eggplant or cucumbers)

    • One allium (ie storage onion, spring onion, leeks or green garlic)

    • One culinary herb (ie basil, chives, cilantro, mint, shiso etc)

Of course, this varies depending on the season. Early shares are green and leafy, mid-season shares sway much more toward fruiting crops, and late season shares are made of more roots and hearty greens and brassicas. Share value fluctuates slightly each week, but we track this to make sure you are getting better value than one would get at a grocery store or farmer’s market for the same freshly grown local produce.

There are some limitations to what we can grow in tight spaces on rooftops in New York City. We do not have the space to grow crops like corn, winter squash or potatoes. Our CSA tends to be ideal for folks who like to eat their greens!

  • Our shares are extremely seasonal, offering a balanced diet as mother nature intended it! We recommend them for one person who cooks vegetarian meals at home most nights, two people who cook omnivorous meals 3-4 nights a week, or to supplement the shopping needs of a larger residence.

Spring/early summer: Lettuce mix, chives, hakurei turnips, bok choy, french breakfast radishes, green garlic, lacinato kale, sunflower shoots

Mid/late summer: Heirloom tomatoes, basil, arugula, shishito peppers, cucumbers, onions, fairytale eggplant, rainbow chard

Late season: Greens mix, carrots, jalapeños, radishes, onions, sprouting broccoli, radicchio, sweet bell peppers

  • We wish we could make ourselves--and our veggies--available 24/7, but alas we cannot, so if you can't pick up during the window specified, our CSA share is not the right one for you. We do not allow late pickup, hold shares until the next day, or double up on shares to make up for missed weeks. A CSA share is a big commitment, and we want our members to be happy they enrolled. Remember, you can always swing by and shop a la carte at one of our farmers markets if you aren't ready to make a commitment to the full CSA share.

  • If you miss a share, you miss a share. We cannot accommodate next day pickups, or doubling up on your share next week if you missed this past week. We encourage you to send a family member, neighbor or friend to pick-up your share in your absence!

  • No! There is no volunteer requirement with our CSA.

  • No, we do not offer half shares, and we don't recommend trying to split our shares with a friend as we'll often include a single cucumber that will be tough to divide at the pickup location, but we are happy to have you and a friend alternate pickup weeks!

  • Yes, we will split the seasonal cost of a share into two installments for members who choose the ‘low income/wealth’ or ‘solidarity share’ but we are not able to extend this to all. We plan and plant our fields based on our CSA enrollment and rely on upfront payments to keep the seeder seeding.
