Event Description
Join the Brooklyn Fräulein, Nicole Rutsch for a day of cooking and food-styling. We’ll start out the day with a quick tour of our rooftop farm where we’ll harvest some early spring herbs and veggies that we’ll incorporate into our creations.

Back in the kitchen, Nicole will walk us through the steps of making one of her signature jams, as well as quick and preserved pickles. She will show you the basics of how to safely preserve using the boiling water bath process and other canning techniques. Once we have made our preserves, we will work on designing a picture-perfect crudité and cheese boards.

Once we have our creations ready to go, we’ll shift gears to focus on the food styling part of the day. Nicole will show you how to tell a story with the food at hand and provide attendees with some basic tips on how to compose, honor the eye, and capture the perfect picture. She we will discuss the art of food styling, the use of props, and touch on composition, light, photo editing and social media. 

This is a hands-on workshop and we’ll have plenty of time to play with the food and props and test things out. If you have a DSLR camera, please bring it! But most importantly bring your camera phone. A little tip: make sure you have space on your phone and clear off your memory card.

Throughout the day we will munch on snacks + enjoy jam-infused drinks and Nicole will share some of her favorite recipes using jams for way more than just your morning toast!

Workshop attendees will go home with a jar of jam and recipe cards and lots of photos to continue to edit and play with!

About Nicole Rutsch:
The Brooklyn Fräulein, Nicole Rutsch, is the founder of Liebe is Jam and Nicole Rutsch Catering & Styling. Born and raised in Stadecken, Germany, Nicole grew up on a farm, learning how to turn leftover fruit into jam and preserves to accompany homemade breads and butter made by her “Oma” (Grandma). Memories of making and eating jam with her grandmother inspired Nicole to begin making her own jams, combining traditional fruit flavors and adding a hint of something different, like lavender, maple and sage.

She started selling her jams on Etsy in 2011 and has since branched out to selling her jam line at stores throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn and eventually starting Nicole Rutsch Catering & Styling, a full-service catering and food + event styling company. When Nicole is not making jam or cooking for her clients, she can be found working on her photography around the city.
