Experience an all natural version of the mysterious and alchemical indigo vat. Unlike most modern indigo dye vats that are prepared quickly with a chemical reducing agent, this workshop will use only sugar and natural ingredients to activate the indigo dyeing power. This dye is perfectly suited for experimenting with shibori- traditional tie, bind and stitch techniques. The Dogwood Dyer's Liz Spencer will demonstrate some of her favorites including itajime and arashi. She will also outline the chemistry and science behind the magic of indigo.
No previous dyeing knowledge necessary. Each participant will leave with various types of indigo dyed fabrics and handouts outlining recipes and info to recreate this beautiful art at home and further experiment. Each participant may also bring a small or medium sized garment of natural fabric (wool, silk, cotton, linen, hemp, etc.) to dye in the vat.
