Harvest, filter, jar, and taste the freshest honey in NYC!
So, you’ve spent the summer learning all about bees now it's time to reap the sweet rewards of your efforts! For the third installment of our summer beekeeping series you’re in for a treat, It’s time for honey harvest!
There's no classroom component to this hands-on course. Instead, we'll head right on up to the rooftop apiary, where participants will first learn how to differentiate between unripe nectar and honey that is ready to harvest. Once we've determined that the bees have finished their work and the honey has thickened to a stable viscosity, Head Beekeeper Geraldine Simonis will show us how to remove the bees from the honey manually.
From there, we'll move into the extraction room where participants will uncap frames of honey for extraction; extract honey with a centrifugal honey extractor; filter and jar the honey, and take part in a honey tasting. You'll never take a teaspoon of honey for granted again.
THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE BROOKLYN NAVY YARD FARM. DETAILED DIRECTIONS CAN BE FOUND BY FOLLOWING THE LINK BELOW AND WILL BE EMAILED PRIOR TO THE EVENT.
PLEASE NOTE: Unless otherwise specified, Brooklyn Grange will not provide credit or refunds for tickets purchased on our website for a workshop, dining event, yoga class, or tour. Events take place rain or shine. Please understand that buying a ticket to one of our events is no different from buying a concert ticket, theater ticket, or movie ticket. You are always welcome to gift your class to a friend if you cannot make it!
Please let us know if you would like to attend but are unable to do so due to registration fees. We are happy to extend a discount or full scholarship to low income members of our community. Brooklyn Grange recognizes that everyone’s situation is unique and we understand that there are circumstances beyond income, but please consider that we have our own bottom line to hit, and an ecosystem whose health depends on the financial sustainability of our organization. Please consider your privilege (ie. education, generational wealth, parental and community support, partnership status and other circumstances that may offer you a safety net which allows more resilience when financial setbacks occur)* before reaching out. Note that we we may ask for proof of income before we are able to make a determination of eligibility.
