This event is SOLD OUT! We still have a couple spots left in our other Beekeeping 101 classes we will be hosting throughout the season!
We’re kicking off our summer beekeeping series with a hive building class! The course will start with a crash course in apiculture, walking participants through a brief history of beekeeping, the issues around beekeeping today, and the importance of apiculture in maintaining a healthy food system. We'll discuss the anatomy of a honey bee; the biology and life cycle of the colony; as well as equipment, hive architecture and basics in beekeeping safety.
We’ll then bust out the wood and paint and put together some hives. While there are many ways of keeping bees worldwide, the most widely used is the Langstroth Hive. Together we’ll construct the hive bodies, honey supers and frames and then we’ll finish them off with a fresh coat of paint. Did you know that bees see in color? Painting the hive helps them to distinguish their home from another. The hives we build will be donated to City Growers a 501c3 non-profit organization that brings honeybee education to NYC school kids.
This workshop is perfect for those of you who are considering beekeeping for the first time and want to learn more before diving into keeping bees on their own. Understanding the foundations of how the hives are constructed will help you troubleshoot and fix any potential problems in the future.
