A Midsummer Night’s Farm Dream!

  • Brooklyn Grange Flushing Avenue and Clinton Avenue Brooklyn, NY, 11205 United States (map)

Join The Youth Farm for our 4th Annual Summer Supper,
“A Midsummer Night’s Farm Dream!”
5:30-6:30 VIP Cocktail Hour
6:30-9pm Soil to Plate dinner

As we look ahead at our 10th Anniversary year (2019!), we aim to lay important groundwork by honoring the soil and the land that has given so much to our community of neighbors, High School for Public Service students, adult farming students, CSA members, volunteers, and farmers market customers!

The Youth Farm is a 1-acre educational farm located on the grounds of the Wingate Campus in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Since 2009, our mission has been to grow fresh, culturally relevant, nutritious food and to cultivate a restorative and educational green space for all the members of our Crown Heights/East Flatbush community. We provide paid summer jobs for high school youth, as well as in-depth organic urban farming certification to adults, in the hopes of increasing and multiplying our diverse city’s ability to sustain communities with nourishing food and green spaces. The Youth Farm, like so many green spaces across NYC, helps our community to maintain a vital connection to nature, maintain agricultural knowledge and traditions, and provide leadership and green job training opportunities for youth and adults. We are rooted in values of food justice:  in co-creating an educational space informed by and celebrating the diversity of our neighborhood and city, and honoring the knowledge bred by diverse lived experience.

Our interpretation of this familiar theme is to lift up and celebrate -- even inhabit (for the night!) -- the magical world of soil and the surrounding ecosystem that influences it and conspires with it to produce the infinite medicinal and culinary delights we savor and depend on for sustenance! If you are new to the science of soil, it is micro and macro flora and fauna in soil that make a farm and food growing possible, working endless chemical “magic” to decompose and convert organic matter into life-giving nutrients that literally grow the food crops we love to eat.

Beloved Brooklyn chef Arden Lewis and the whole team at Purslane join us for a second year in a row, and have crafted a soil-to-plate menu as diverse as the soil community itself that highlights the myriad flavors, shapes, and textures that soil inhabitants help to conjur through their transformative processes.

You will be transported through Chef Arden’s delectable bites and delightful sounds atop the world's largest rooftop farm – another oasis brimming with soil and biological life! You'll savor gorgeous views, and a seasonal meal curated carefully with locally produced vegetables, herbs, dairy, meat and grains, complimented by locally produced wine and beer, and other non alcoholic drinks. We will also have a fantastic raffle with lots of great prizes!

We hope you join us to toast to and revel in the anciently wise world below our plates and feet. Your support will helps provide access to a precious acre of land, a wellspring of education and transformational experiences! Your support also makes possible continued nurturing of this soil, so that it may continue to provide nourishment to others, whether through food and medicine grown there, or through intellectual, spiritual or educational experiences that happen on the land, every year for hundreds of New Yorkers!
