PRODUCE SALES MANAGER
BROOKLYN GRANGE ROOFTOP FARM

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Brooklyn Grange, the world's leading soil-based rooftop farming business, is seeking a detail-oriented, personable, and hard-working individual to  sell our produce to various wholesale, CSA and farmers market outlets. Primarily working on-site at our farms, the Produce Sales Manager will engage our wholesale accounts in-person at restaurants, retail outlets, and distribution locations throughout the city. The Produce Sales Manager will report to the Director of Farming Operations, and will be involved in all aspects of our  sales program, from fielding inquiries, procuring new accounts, effecting sales, maintaining client relations, working closely with our farm team, preparing pick lists for our farmers, and invoicing.


Our farm is a fast-paced environment where we strive for quality and efficiency. The Produce Sales Manager should be personable, dynamic, and equipped with hustle and initiative. Self-motivated and analytical, the right candidate should be able to keep track of multiple pieces of information concerning our crops and our customers, be comfortable finding new sales channels on the fly, and be driven to build new long-term partnerships, while also maintaining positive relationships with our existing accounts. The Produce Sales Manager must be able to work outside in all weather, lift heavy loads repeatedly, and spend long periods standing, bending over, reaching, etc.  Experience selling produce at farm stands, greenmarket, or other farms is a plus.


SCHEDULE:

We are looking for a dedicated individual to commit full time, beginning in early March. Work will include some early mornings.


ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

Brooklyn Grange is the world's largest green roof farming business. We grow vegetables, keep bees, and host events on two roofs in LIC, Queens, and in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, respectively. We also design and install green roofs, gardens, and farms for clients ranging from private homes to corporate headquarters to low-income housing facilities.


All three of our departments--our Farming division, our Events program, and the Design and Installation arm--are part of our close-knit "farmily," so working with Brooklyn Grange means working alongside a diverse team of extraordinary and knowledgeable individuals who share a common goal of making their city a greener, more sustainable and delicious place to live.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drive sales of all crops allocated for wholesale

  • Work closely with Farm Managers, Microgreens Manager, and Director of Farming Operations to assess availability of produce and efficiently maximize sales across all farm locations

  • Cultivate positive relationships with chefs and produce buyers at all accounts, with an eye towards understanding individual account preferences

  • Prepare pick lists and sales invoices

  • Correspond with accounts throughout week to line up biweekly sales

  • Identify and secure new, larger-scale accounts and distribution channels

  • Identify new microgreens accounts and increase microgreens sales

  • Assist with harvest, washing, and packing for wholesale accounts, and assist with farm work during the “off-season” to ensure familiarity with Brooklyn Grange crops and farming practices

  • Work closely with delivery driver to ensure timely and accurate deliveries orders


THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Is personable, professional, and self-motivated

  • Has passion and knowledge for details of vegetable flavors and cooking

  • Has prior, demonstrated experience in sales, preferably in the farming or food industries

  • Has knowledge of, or is keen to independently learn about, produce distribution channels

  • Is excited about the challenges of selling produce, as well as identifying new long term accounts and distributors

  • Can work independently, as well as cooperatively as part of the farming team

  • Is organized, detail-oriented, and efficient

  • Loves working outdoors in any weather

  • Is able to lift 50 lbs repeatedly, and to squat, kneel, bend over, and reach for extended time periods

  • Valid driver's license

  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus
