ABOUT OUR FARM
Brooklyn Grange is the leading rooftop farming and intensive green roofing business in the US, entering our eighth growing season. We operate the world’s largest rooftop soil farms, located on two roofs in New York City, and grow over 50,000 lbs of organically-cultivated produce per year using no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. We grow salad greens, kale, chard, carrots, peppers hot and sweet, eggplants, cucumbers, mixed herbs, onions, radishes, turnips, heirloom tomatoes, and more.
In addition to growing and distributing fresh local vegetables and herbs, Brooklyn Grange also hosts events and educational programming, provides urban farming and green roof consulting and installation services to clients worldwide, and partners with numerous non-profit organizations throughout New York to promote healthy and strong local communities.
ABOUT YOUR CSA SHARE
Becoming a CSA member means a weekly supply of freshly picked produce straight from our farm! What’s included varies throughout the season based on ripeness and flavor. Periodically, we may include special items such as microgreens, flowers, hand-made farm gear (tote bags and t-shirts), seedlings, and/or our own jarred goods like hot sauce and honey.
DURATION: 23 weeks, beginning Saturday, May 20th and ending Saturday, October 21st
PRICE: $25.00 per week for 23 weeks = $575.00
PICK‐UP WINDOW: Saturdays 11am-4pm
PICKUP LOCATION: Brooklyn Grange Flagship Farm Building, 37-18 Northern Blvd, LIC, Queens 11101
PLEASE THINK OVER WHETHER YOU CAN MAKE THE PICKUP WINDOW!
We know many folks travel during summer weekends, and can't make the Saturday midday pickup. We wish we could make ourselves--and our veggies--available 24/7, but alas we cannot, so if you can't pick up between 11am and 4pm on Saturdays, our CSA share is not the right one for you. We do not allow late pickup, hold shares until the next day, or double up on shares to make up for missed weeks. A CSA share is a big commitment, and we want our members to be happy they enrolled. Remember, you can always swing by and shop a la carte at our Saturday farmstand if you aren't ready to make a commitment to the full CSA share.
First time CSA member? Here are some things to note about CSA shares:
You pay 100% of the fees up front.
Like a magazine subscription, you pay for the entire season now, then get a weekly share of our produce harvest mid-May through October.
If you miss a share, you miss a share.
We don't offer early, late, or next day pickups, or doubling up on your share next week if you missed this past week. We do offer the opportunity to opt-in to a contact info-sharing platform with other members so you can switch weeks with folks and take their share when they go out of town, then let them take yours when you're away.
You get what you get (and you don't get upset!)
We are extremely loyal to our CSA members, and typically, you get the cream of the crop. We know you're busy New Yorkers with small kitchens, so rather than sending you home with pounds and pounds of potatoes, onions, and baseball-bat sized carrots, we focus on higher-value items that make more sense for an apartment dweller cooking in summer: lots of salad greens, braising greens, herbs, and reasonable amounts of peppers, tomatoes, carrots, radishes, eggplant, etc. However, we may occasionally include things you don't like (cilantro). Don't like it? Don't take it! Not sure how to use it, or even what the heck it is? Don't worry, we send weekly emails the day before your pickup with the list of items and preparation tips!
SAMPLE CSA SHARES:
New members frequently ask what they can expect to find in their shares. Below are sample shares taken from our 2016 membership records. You’ll notice that in spring, shares tend to trend towards leafier greens like salad mixes, kale and herbs (and therefore tend to be lighter in weight/value), while in midsummer nightshades and cucurbits rule, and fall sees more root veggies. We aim to exceed the market value of your share each week, but sometimes our smaller harvests in the beginning and end of the year mean that we do not have $25 worth of a variety of produce for our members. Rest assured, we do keep track of the value of our shares and will make up for a light spring with a greater bounty in summer.
Our shares are extremely seasonal, offering a balanced diet as mother nature intended it! We recommend them for one person who cooks vegetarian meals at home most nights, two people who cook omnivorous meals 3-4 nights a week, or to supplement the shopping needs of a larger residence.
