You may love sourdough bread, yogurt and pickles but can you imagine living off of nothing but fermented foods for an entire year? One brave homebrewer, Derek Dellinger, attempted just that! For an entire year, Dellinger ate and drink only products that had been created by microbes. In his entertaining and informative narrative The Fermented Man (Overlook Press, July 2016) Dellinger catalogs his year spent on this unorthodox diet, revealing insights about the science of fermentation, as well as its cultural history, culinary value, and nutritional impact along the way. Exploring the vast world of fermentation, Dellinger became the living embodiment of its cultural and nutritional power―he became the Fermented Man.
In this two-hour, hands-on workshop you will have the opportunity to learn everything there is to know about fermentation from the Fermented Man himself! Using carrots grown on site at Brooklyn Grange, Dellinger will walk you through the steps of an age old method of preserving vegetables, turning them into a delicious and healthy snack that will keep the summer harvest fresh for months to come. We may even throw in some hot peppers to spice things up a bit!
Weather permitting, this workshop will take place outdoors on the roof, otherwise we will move to our indoor loft space
THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE BROOKLYN NAVY YARD FARM. DETAILED DIRECTIONS CAN BE FOUND BY FOLLOWING THE LINK BELOW.
