Chief Operating Officer & Founding Partner
Gwen Schantz is co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Brooklyn Grange LLC. A long-time sustainable food advocate, Gwen has a background in non-profit management and sustainable development. She was formerly based in Cambodia, where she worked for Pact Asia on its Women’s Empowerment program, and in New York with the Grace Communications foundation, working on their Food and Water campaigns. In 2009 she co-founded the Bushwick Food Cooperative, and she is also a co-founder of City Growers, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that reaches over 4,000 New York City children with food and farm education each year.
As the head of Brooklyn Grange’s Design and Installations division, Gwen creates and builds innovative green spaces for a diverse clientele, from schools and non-profit organizations, to private residences and commercial buildings. Gwen’s dedication to solving urban environmental problems through the installation of soil and plants has been recognized by Curbed, who honored her as a 2015 “Young Gun” designer. She has given talks at various colleges and universities, served as an Adjunct Professor at New York University’s Environmental Studies Department, and spoken to audiences at AIGA, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, Greenbuild Conference, the Urban Green Council, the Department of City Planning of New York, and the Brooklyn Food Conference, among others. She is a registered General Contractor, an experienced Sustainability Consultant, and has managed dozens of urban garden and green roof design-build projects.
When she’s not drawing up plans for a new and superior green wall system or directing a crane load of soil and plants, she can be found at home with her husband and two sons, playing in the backyard or cooking up something delicious.
