PESTS AT THE FARM!

Shotgunned arugula from Fall '12 -- like swiss cheese!

Shotgunned arugula from Fall ’12 — like swiss cheese!

On this episode of HRN’s Rooftop Farming with Ben Flanner, he updates us on two pernicious spring pests: flea beetles and pigeons.  Check out this “shotgunned” arugula leaf from last year’s pestpocalypse — what a bummer these guys are!  The best defense against them is row cover, but it’s tough to cover rows on a windy rooftop farm!  And row cover doesn’t seem to deter those jerks of the sky, pigeons, who peck right through it to munch on the tasty peas beneath.  Ah, the trials and tribulations of organic farming…  At least we don’t have to deal with deer!!
